A group of Venezuelan citizens living in Mérida gathered at the Monumento a la Patria to express their discontent over the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro as president again.

The Venezuelan community joined the international protests and carried flags and posters with slogans such as “Long live Venezuela free,” “We have the minutes, Edmundo president,” and “Glory to the brave people!” South Americans raised slogans against the current regime in their country.

The protest was called through Facebook through the Libertad para Todos account.

About 100 people protested. The signs of support were immediate, and drivers passing by the place honked their horns in solidarity.

“We are here to raise our voices for all those Venezuelans who at this moment cannot do so in Venezuela, because they do not have the social media to do so,” said one of the protesters when taking the microphone.

“Venezuelans around the world are called to raise our voices for all Venezuelans who are in our homeland, who are kidnapped by an oppressive regime like that of Nicolás Maduro,” he said.

During the demonstration, elements of the State Police were present at the site, and were attentive to any situation.

The day in Venezuela was plagued by discontent and protests, after which the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado Parisca was arrested after being intercepted while leaving the demonstration she led against the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro, as confirmed by a spokeswoman for her campaign command. She was later released.
