On average, one house is built per day in Conkal, according to Inegi.
With the eventual permission of the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) of Yucatan, the urban area of Conkal will grow even more this year, with nine new apartment towers and the urbanization of a plot of land for housing, projects for which public consultations to give the environmental impact authorizations began on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Located 23.7 km northeast of downtown Mérida, the municipality of Conkal registered an increase of 82.3% in its population in the decade 2010-2020, going from 9,143 to 16,671 inhabitants, after increasing only 20% a decade earlier, since in the year 2000 it only had 7,620 inhabitants, according to the censuses of the Inegi.
As if that were not enough, the urban area of Conkal is growing at a greater rate than its population, with the consequent impact on its land, flora, fauna, and subsoil.
According to Inegi, the total number of houses in the municipality rose 71.7% from 2000 to 2010, going from 1,636 to 2,809 houses, but increased just over double (1.3 times) in the following decade, to 6,507 houses in 2020. That is, 3,698 houses were built in 10 years, an average of 369.8 per year, 30.8 per month, and one house per day.
Uninhabited houses
However, in Conkal the proportion of abandoned houses also increased from 2010 to 2020, from 20 to 23%. According to Inegi, only 4,990 of the 6,507 homes were inhabited in 2020, while in 2010, 2,275 of the total 2,809 were, so uninhabited houses tripled in that period, from 534 to 1,517.
Conkal has gone from a small town to a city
The highest concentration of inhabitants and homes is recorded in the town of Conkal, where the population rose 19.2% from 2000 to 2010, going from 6,019 to 7,173 people, so it was a town as it did not reach 8,000 inhabitants to be a town, but it increased 94.3% in the following decade, reaching 13,944 residents in 2020. It was only 1,056 residents short of being a city, a title it would achieve with the Population Census of 2025.
In turn, the number of houses in the town of Conkal increased by 83.2% and 1.3 times, respectively, going from 1,313 to 2,392 and then to 5,492 total homes, in the same order. That is, from 2010 to 2020, 3,100 houses were built (310 per year, 25.8 per month, and almost one house (0.86) per day.
