Yucatán has barbaric traditions and customs, according to an activist

Rituals and traditions that involve animal sacrifices, such as the turkey-cutting dance, I completely repudiate, said activist Elsa Arceo Medina.

The fighter against animal abuse in Yucatán stated that “if they are going to continue with those traditional attitudes that for me are not traditions, then let human sacrifices return to see how we are doing,” she commented.

“We are a national and global shame. We see in the various celebrations where animals are mistreated. They are customary and archaic attitudes, we have to evolve,” he added.

“You have to talk to the legislators who are in charge of the issue of animal welfare. Bullfighting, lasso tournaments, and the ‘baxal toro’, all those traditional activities in our state, do not exist in other parts of the Republic.

“It seems that we are living in the age of cavemen. Animals are harmed in these activities, which should be prohibited because they are cruelly murdered and that is a crime against the life of a sentient being,” he said.

“Slaughter is promoted in roping tournaments, there are gutted horses, but in addition, alcoholism and drug addiction are promoted in these events and minors are allowed entry.”

“There is a recommendation by Human Rights that minors are not allowed to enter these events and here in Yucatán, they do not seem to care,” she indicated.

“We have the bullfight on January 26 in Mérida, which they call the white bullfight for the 96th anniversary of the Mérida Bullring. We see that the majority of those who come are not even Mexican, they are foreigners because bullfighting is prohibited in their places of origin.”

Elsa Arceo considered there are ways to preserve culture and traditions without resorting to animal sacrifice.

The activists highlighted such as traditional dance, the “Jarana”, and the Mayan buildings that allowed the Yucatecan culture to be promoted.

Some time ago, in the National Palace, a legislator brought a chicken to sacrifice and was strongly criticized, she recalled. “I am Yucatecan, but it is shameful to be hearing in the 21st century that these customary attitudes continue and people applaud them, enjoy them. They are sick people and need psychological and psychiatric help,” she said regarding the lasso tournaments and the sacrifice of animals, among other local activities.
