The Government of Yucatán announced the opening of two migrant care homes in the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, California. These new headquarters will provide legal advice and comprehensive support to Yucatecan countrymen in the United States.
Through the Institute for the Development of Mayan Culture of the State of Yucatán (INDEMAYA), the state government seeks to strengthen ties with the migrant community. Currently, work is being done on the reorganization of the existing house and on the opening of new offices to offer more accessible and effective services.
The head of INDEMAYA, Fabiola Loeza Novelo, highlighted the importance of municipal and foreign networks in guaranteeing timely attention to Yucatecans. He also mentioned that the programs include productive projects for those who return to the entity, facilitating their adaptation.
The Mayan Renaissance program places special emphasis on the human needs of migrants and their families. Among the highlighted services is attention to the emotional health of the wives and family members of those who are abroad.
According to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the National Migration Institute (INM), it is estimated that 350,000 Yucatecans reside in the United States. Most are found in California, Oregon, Washington, Texas, and Colorado.
The migrants come mainly from municipalities such as Oxkutzcab, Tekax, Peto, Muna, and Maní, among others.
