Cargo trucks have to travel only during the day because, at night and early morning, they are targets of assaults and robberies, says Francisco Rivas Gamboa, president of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) in Yucatán.
Even the trailers of large commercial chains travel with escorts, which makes the products they transport more expensive because any increase is charged to the freight rate.
In addition, he regretted that high-risk road sections starting from Tabasco and the country’s central area.
“Any increase in freight transportation has an immediate impact on the final price of products and articles,” he acknowledged. “Anyone who says they don’t increase their merchandise is lying.”
“Transportation is a spiral chain: if tolls, fuel, and salaries go up, it has to be reflected in the cost of the trip.”
Rivas Gamboa stated that diesel is a work tool for transporters, which should be considered in the workplace so that it does not rise further.
However, this year’s increase of a few cents is because the federal government withdrew the subsidy for the Special Tax on Production and Services (Ieps).
The leader of the cargo transporters reported that he will arrange a meeting with Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena to propose that they incorporate Canacar or create a Natural Disasters Committee.
With this, he stated, they seek to enable trucking businessmen to participate with their trucks in community services when there is a natural disaster in the state, such as hurricanes, fires, and other emergencies.
He even said that the transporters collaborate with public security in the Yucatecan and peninsular territory, as they report directly to the Ministry of Public Security the incidents they see along the way or when they detect any suspicious movement that could be criminal acts.
