The president of the local delegation of the National Chamber of the Fishing and Aquaculture Industry, Enrique Sánchez Sánchez, reported that although coastal fishermen will stop catching lobster from the first days of next February, the highest-sea vessels will continue with that fishery until the last day of the season, which is February 28.
He explained that the lobster fishermen from Dzilam de Bravo, San Felipe, Río Lagartos, and El Cuyo Tizimín will suspend the capture of the crustacean at the beginning of February, in a decision made to preserve that species.
He added that, however, the highest-sea vessels continue with the lobster catch that began on July 1, 2024, and ends on February 28, 2025; likewise, the fishermen from the Center-West of the State will also continue with that fishery until February 28.
He said that they estimate that 450 tons of the crustacean have been caught, and they hope to reach 600 tons. The price of a kilo fluctuates between 430 and 450 pesos, and there will be products for sale to the national and foreign markets.
Finally, Sánchez added that lobster is in high demand in the Riviera Maya of Quintana Roo, and there will be enough product for its demand during Lent and Holy Week in March and April, respectively; although in reality, they expected to reach 700 tons of lobster.
