Don Venicio Yama Hernández lost his house in the Emiliano Zapata Oriente neighborhood of Mérida for a debt, the documents for which he does not know, since he cannot read or write.
With the use of public force and without prior notice, Venicio Yama Hernández, a 70-year-old man who cannot read or write, was evicted from his home in the Emiliano Zapata Oriente neighborhood, in Mérida.
The eviction, carried out with the presence of two patrol cars from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) and a moving truck, was promoted by Ángel René Cruz García and his lawyer, under the argument of a debt of 25 thousand pesos contracted more than 15 years ago.
POR ESTO! Reporters went to the home, located on Calle 36 No. 333 between 37 and 39 to document the process. The affected person’s relatives claimed that they were not informed about the debt and that Mr. Venicio was unaware of the documents that were presented to him since he could not read or write. Despite his protests, all his belongings were taken out onto the street and there was no way to stop the process.
“According to this person, I asked him for a loan of 25 thousand pesos in 2010, but I do not know him, I have never dealt with him,” declared Mr. Venicio. In addition, he pointed out that Cruz García had tried to buy the house from him on one occasion, but he refused.
Reyna Beatriz Cahum Pool, daughter-in-law of the affected person, described the action as an injustice and criticized the lack of information before proceeding with the eviction. “They kicked us out without us knowing clearly what was happening,” she said.
“This would be the second house that Mr. Cruz García has evicted in this way. We know that a few blocks away, under the guise of being a moneylender, he also took over the property located on 34-C and 35 streets in the same subdivision,” he said.
When trying to obtain the version of those responsible for the eviction, the POR ESTO! Reporters were received with threats and intimidation by the lawyer who accompanied Cruz García. In addition, the lawyer mocked Mr. Venicio’s family for not knowing the law or having legal representation to defend themselves.
It is imperative that the State Government investigates this case, because Don Venicio could be the victim of a fraud, and that would be a great injustice.
