Quintana Roo authorities have intensified operations on the border with Belize to stop the illegal entry of people into the state, due to the reinforcement of security on the country’s northern border.

Likewise, Julio César Gómez Torres, head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), reported on the actions implemented.

The official explained that most of the seizures of migrants have been registered in the northern area of the state, especially with the arrival of people from Cuba.

In addition, attempts to enter with false documentation have been detected at international airports, which has led to strengthening surveillance.

“We are strengthening actions in coordination with the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and the Navy to patrol the border with Belize, in addition to maintaining joint operations with authorities of that country,” said Gómez Torres.

Unlike Chiapas, where the migration crisis is more visible due to its proximity to Guatemala, in Quintana Roo the main challenge is border control and security. In the Río Hondo region, the main problem is not illegal migration, but merchandise smuggling.

“We have not registered seizures of migrants in this area; what does prevail is informal trade and trafficking of illegal products. However, the main security problem in the state continues to be drug dealing, since conflicts between criminal groups for control of these markets generate most of the violence,” the official added.

As part of the security strategy, patrols have been strengthened in rural areas, historically used as routes for the transfer of goods and other illegal activities. Surveillance at these points is key to preventing irregular migration and smuggling from becoming a major problem in the region.
