Community tourism will be essential for Mérida families to experience a real economic benefit, said the mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada. She also highlighted that Mérida is positioned as a safe and attractive destination for congress and convention tourism, consolidating its economic and cultural potential.
As a result of her recent trip to Mexico City, the mayor reported that the Mérida city council secured the holding of an important convention, which will bring direct benefits to the local economy.
Cecilia Patrón stressed that security is one of the main attractions of Mérida, a key characteristic for event, congress and convention organizers looking for reliable environments. In addition, she highlighted the city’s hotel capacity, its two convention centers and the diversity of free cultural events held daily.
The mayor emphasized that tourism must generate employment and well-being for both those who visit Mérida and those who live there. For this reason, the City Council promotes community tourism, involving artisans, chefs and local producers in the tourist experience.
One example of this approach was the collaboration with local producers to offer Yucatecan cuisine at a meeting of tourism wholesalers event, where the traditional chicharra from Xcalachén was highlighted.
