Local Congressman Wilmer Monforte Marfil presented to the plenary session of the Congress of Yucatan an initiative for the legal recognition of the peninsular Mayan language to guarantee the linguistic rights of more than 500 thousand Yucatecans who speak this ancestral language.
The proposal seeks that Mayan speakers receive attention in their native language in various areas, such as ejidal assemblies, health, security, defense, and municipal and state administrations.
Monforte Marfil highlighted that this measure involves the translation of official documents and procedures from Spanish to Mayan, ensuring that citizens fully understand what they sign and avoiding confusion that could violate their rights.
The initiative also contemplates the hiring of bilingual teachers capable of teaching classes in Mayan and Spanish, with special attention in the interior of the state, without neglecting the capital.
The project also proposes the incorporation of interpreters in various public institutions, thus strengthening the cultural identity and rights of the Mayan peoples in Yucatan.
This project seeks to preserve the linguistic and cultural diversity of the region and to empower Mayan communities, ensuring that they can exercise their rights without facing discrimination based on language.
