Infonavit seeks to serve those who earn up to two minimum wages so that they can buy houses for 500 thousand pesos.

After the approval of the reform by the Chamber of Deputies, the Institute of the National Fund for Workers’ Housing (Infonavit) announced on Monday, February 3rd, that in Yucatan it plans to build 9,500 social housing units aimed mainly at workers who earn between one and two minimum wages, and that will have an approximate cost of 500 thousand pesos.

The head of Infonavit in Yucatan, Mauricio Sahuí Rivero, specified that each house will consist of two bedrooms, a plot of land measuring between 90 and 100 square meters, which will be built in strategic areas concerning the work centers, and that will allow a quality of life for families.

He also explained that work has begun at tables between the federal government and the state government to define the polygons in which the houses will be built, but the municipalities of Mérida, Kanasín, Umán, Ucú, Progreso, and Valladolid are considered.

“The main project for 2025 is to act according to this new vision of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo that Infonavit once again looks at the most needy workers; the objective of this institution is that all beneficiaries have access to decent housing. The real estate growth, the development that we have seen throughout the country and if we apply it to Mérida very particularly it is illustrative to observe it, has resulted in the price of housing becoming more expensive every day, the value of land becoming more expensive and in the end we have beneficiaries who have contributed enough to obtain a loan, but the offer in the market for that type of credit does not exist,” said Sahuí Rivero.

He pointed out that this situation mainly affects workers who earn between one and two minimum wages, because they are not finding a housing offer on the market, and they are forced to make greater economic efforts to be able to access a house.

“We are attentive to how the secondary laws come, pending the reform that was already made for the generation of this new attribution that Infonavit has for the construction of housing, we will be focusing very strongly on this, the objective is to build approximately nine thousand 500 houses in different points of the state where the right-holders have an impact,” Sahuí Rivero concluded.
