Just three weeks away from celebrating its 50th anniversary, the “La Reina” Zoo is carrying out the second stage of improvements, rehabilitation, and conditioning of its facilities.

Just a few days ago, brigades of workers began creating spaces that imitate the natural habitat of animals in search of improving living conditions while in captivity.

They have even begun to design a plan to rearrange the species to optimize the distribution and living conditions of birds, reptiles, mammals, and felines, among others.

The biologists who work in the park, both permanent and interns, who are students of the Tizimín Technological Institute, have been a key element in the creation of these new spaces because as part of their environmental enrichment projects they have made modifications to the cages.

The director of the park, Manuel Alcocer Perera, explained that over the last few months, entertainment spaces, rest areas, and redesigns of the facilities have been adapted that had never been done before.

Even with felines, they have included tilapia in their diets, which they put in water pools to stimulate their senses, or as in the case of monkeys, a little house has been adapted in their living space for them to rest in a shaded space.

As he explained, divisions are being carried out in large cages, such as in the case of goats and sheep, for better organization. It is also intended to do the same for the peacocks and ostriches, because when they are together, by nature the largest species hurts and plucks the smallest ones.

Other birds have special feeders built for them. because they were used to being given their food on the ground. Also, the tapir now has a new outdoor resting space made of wood, and palm tree leaves.

All the animals were recently dewormed at the request of the veterinarian to prevent diseases, and others were injected to avoid damage to the skin due to the presence of ticks as the hot season is about to begin.

On the other hand, the director of Public Services, Carlos Balderas Rosado, said that there are plans for a rearrangement of the species that they will present to Semarnat. He said that they continue to be in constant communication with the staff and fortunately the Zoo staff and the facilities are working very well.
