The mayor of Mérida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, announced, through her weekly press conference, the “Ta Wéetel” campaign, which will consist of different actions to continue and improve the dissemination and preservation of the Mayan language in the state capital.
“In Mérida, 7.5 percent of the population is Mayan-speaking, and at the state level it is 23.7 percent,” said the mayor, while stressing the importance of giving greater emphasis to those who speak the language and those who want to learn.
In this way, she reported that courses will be held at the Mayan Language Institute in conjunction with the Segey, a completely Mayan Ayuntatel telephone line will also be implemented and training will be given to the municipal directorates, in addition to activities and actions that will be provided to the people of Mérida.
This program is structured through a linguistic plan that will promote and teach the correct use of the Mayan language.
