The renovation work on the Progreso port’s boardwalk area has begun, with the approaching start of the high tourist season for the Carnival festivities.
Yesterday, very early in the morning, personnel from the Municipal Public Works and Services departments began to carry out work in the tourist area of this port, concentrating mainly on the traditional boardwalk and the wooden dock area.
Among the actions that are being carried out to improve the image of this area, are the removal of sand on the outskirts of the traditional boardwalk, on the way to the Muelle de Chocolate, the planting of coconut trees at the end of it, the restoration of the statue of Juan Miguel Castro and the renovation of the Callejón del Amor, among other points.
These tasks are aimed at putting the site in order given the proximity of the Progreso 2025 Carnival festivities, which is expected to attract a huge number of tourists to the area and provide a high impact on the economic spillover, as has occurred in past years.
Part of the renovation that is being carried out is due to the weather conditions in recent weeks, where the presence of sand in the area of the traditional boardwalk has been highlighted, as well as the state of the palm trees on the site, so these actions were the first to be attended to.
On the other hand, the repairs to the international boardwalk, the Chocolate Pier, and the wooden walkway that were damaged since Hurricane Milton passed in October of last year, it is not clear whether they will be attended to thoroughly in this first intervention or if these actions will be carried out gradually over the next few weeks so that by the end of February they will be in ideal conditions to receive tourists.
In light of these repairs, José Medina, a local Palapero, commented that these works will help a lot so that the tourists expected to arrive for the festivities will have space to enjoy the show, indicating that in recent years, the Carnival has attracted thousands of people, who come to the port and are divided between those who stay only on the traditional boardwalk, and those who prefer to have a little more space moving toward the Muelle de Chocolate, making both places very crowded.
The attention provided to these tourist attractions is well received by the tourism sector, which described the work as a success and a necessary action, with the proximity of the most important periods in the municipality, such as the Carnival of Progreso and weeks later, Semana Santa.
