Yucatán became the only state in the country to receive the Spirit of Discovery cruise ship from the Saga shipping company, which set sail from England with a total of 1,396 people on board for a 50-day trip through America.
Through a press release, it was reported that on behalf of Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, the Secretary of Tourism Development (SEFOTUR), Darío Flota Ocampo, led the ceremony of exchanging plaques with the Captain of the Spirit of Discovery, Franko Papic.
According to the information provided, the secretary highlighted the interest of the Saga shipping company to include Yucatán in its 50-day itinerary through American ports, to provide European tourists with the experience of Mayan culture.
The official ceremony stated that the Spirit of Discovery set sail on January 6 from Portsmouth, England, to tour Portugal, St. Lucia, Barbados, the Grenadines, the Antilles Islands, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Belize, Progreso, Texas, and Bermuda, ending on February 24 in England.
The same bulletin indicates that the ship is carrying 896 European passengers, mostly English, and 499 crew members, who had the opportunity to visit some emblematic sites of Mayan culture, as well as other beautiful tourist destinations in the state or to do some activity on the beach.
The cruise ship also has 100 passenger cabins designed for solo travelers and employs 530 crew members.
She is the first cruise ship from the Meyer Werft-built Saga line, delivered for her maiden voyage in July 2019, on a route that included ports around the United Kingdom and Ireland, and in January 2021 she made her longest voyage around South America in an 83-day journey.
To better recover waste heat, the ship is also equipped with a centralized water heating system that reduces pump power by 65 kW to save 200 MWh per year.
She is built to the polar code, meaning she meets international IMO standards for sailing in frozen waters.
