On Tuesday, February 25, the employee of a cafeteria located in the San Juan neighborhood in Downtown Merida, suffered verbal aggressions, intimidation, and death threats from a foreigner at her workplace. The following is the transcription of the story told by her:
It was 6:50 am when I heard someone enter the cafeteria even though it was closed. I thought it was a customer, but it was the guy staying at the Airbnb that is right next to the cafeteria and he came in exclusively to ask me to turn down the volume of the music (which was not that loud), for which I apologized and turned the music down immediately.
The man, upon realizing that I was alone in the cafeteria, became aggressive and insulted me, denigrating me by telling me that this was not turning down the volume, and he began to get very upset as if he were under the influence of some drug.
I tried to apologize and calm the situation down but it was no use as he continued to get crazier and that’s when he started making threats, saying that he was going to burn down the cafeteria when there were people there, and he was going to come back with a knife to break everything in the art gallery and the cafeteria.
He went totally beserk and started throwing things and breaking them insulting, intimidating and scaring me.
He blocked my way out of the bar so I couldn’t leave. He went to get a vase from the gallery and instead of breaking it where he got it, he approached the bar to break it right in front of me, and did the same with a glass jar where we keep the ground coffee.
He threatened me not to call the police, as he said that he knew people who could come to kill me if I did, so it was better for me to keep quiet and don’t say anything.
Fortunately a client came in because she heard the screams and when he noticed her presence, he told me that I had been warned. He immediately changed his attitude and left the cafeteria, while he told the client that “nothing happened here.”
We have already filed a complaint against the subject Joan Serra Montagut, who is apparently a Spanish activist of Catalan origin, who is a representative of the Catalunya cultural sector in Yucatan. He has appeared on radio programs and has won different types of awards for his activism.
I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, I HOLD JOAN SERRA MONTAGUT COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE, HE IS A VERY DANGEROUS AND UNSTABLE MAN WHO THREATENS DEFENSLESS WOMEN.
In the footage it can be observed how he was verbally abusing, threatening with death and intimidating me with insults and curses.
This is the whole statement made by the young woman who asked to remain anonymous for fear to reprisals from this individual.
The video has gone viral on social networks, and many Merida residents have warned the aggressor that he better watch his back because more than one Yucatecan wants to run into him in the street to let him know that he is very mistaken if he thinks that he can go around this country attacking inocent women without consequences.
This type of behavior from a foreigner could trigger what is now known as the “Tekit Syndrome”, and the people of our beloved state of Yucatan can be kind and hospitable, but can also take justice in their own hands if they consider it necessary.
The local authorities will take action in this case, and at The Yucatan Times we will follow it up and keep you posted on the evolution of the situation.
