The cancellation of Fincantieri for the deep-sea port would be a failure for Yucatan
The recent decision of the Italian firm Fincantieri not to continue with its investment project in the deep-sea port represents an unexpected setback and a hard blow to the economy of Yucatan.
The cancellation of this project represents a setback in the development of the state and in its economic potential that has been below its possibilities for decades.
Any project that involves expanding infrastructure and generating new jobs and services, which is subsequently cancelled is obviously bad news for the local economy.
The Italian company Fincantieri was supposed to build the largest shipyard in Latin America in Progreso.
But recently, it announced the cancellation of the project, and although it is not officially ruled out, the message has been one of cancellation.
However, the door is always open for the same Italian company to take up the project if the state government negotiates with the federal government to generate the conditions that the Italians require.
There are always viable alternatives to attract investment in the naval sector, such as seeking the interest of Asian corporations, which currently dominate the industry.
The problem is that efforts are made to attract large foreign capital by state authorities, and subsequently, the federal government refuses to generate the conditions that investors require.
