In the first 11 months of 2024, the emblematic “Xiinbal” Maya Train project recorded a total of 431,199 passenger movements on the routes that run through the Mexican Caribbean.
According to statistics from the Secretariat of Tourism of the State of Quintana Roo (Sedetur), from January to November of last year, the Maya Train cars transported more than 400 thousand national passengers and more than 30 thousand international travelers on its almost 600 kilometers of rails that connect the 12 stations located in the state of Quintana Roo.
During that period, passenger movements increased as the months went by and the popularity and curiosity to travel on the Maya Train increased.
In January of last year, the movements registered on the Mexican Caribbean routes closed with 13,073 passengers, six months later, in June, 33,717 were counted and in November it registered its largest movement with a total of 57,093 passengers.
The Maya Train stations in Quintana Roo are located in Nuevo Xcán, Leona Vicario, Cancún Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Tulum Airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Limones-Chacchoben, Bacalar, Chetumal Airport and Nicolás Bravo-Kohunlich.
In December of last year, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, accompanied by Mara Lezama, governor of Quintana Roo, cut the inaugural ribbon of sections six and seven of the Maya Train in Chetumal, the capital of the entity and the place where Mexico begins.
The Maya Train connects the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, and throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, nine Protected Natural Areas and 57 protection areas were created, with more than 1,397,000 hectares, so the Maya Train protects nature and promotes sustainable tourism.
The Maya Train is expected to have 42 trains manufactured in Mexico and the exterior design of its cars is inspired by the ancient Mayan culture and the majesty of the jaguar, an animal endemic to the southeast.
