Authorities and civil society have joined forces in recent years to preserve and revitalize the Historic Center of Mérida, to continue to grow and attract visitors from all over the world.

This was highlighted by Zazil Canto Ureña, president of the Board of Trustees of the Historic Center of Mérida, who announced that the “Positive Attitude” campaign will soon be presented. The campaign seeks to raise awareness among motorists to respect this iconic space, with speed limits of a maximum of 30 kilometers per hour, care for pedestrians, preference for people with disabilities, and avoiding the use of the horn, among other things.

He pointed out that another of the fundamental aspects that residents and people who come to the Center every day must take care of is the correct disposal of their garbage, which is relevant to maintaining an optimal presentation, not only for aesthetic purposes but also so that it lasts as it is known.

He indicated that also through his “Living Historical Center” campaign, initiatives are supported that aim to detonate and make this area of the state capital visible, such as fairs, and activities that not only attract foreign and national visitors, but also locals.

“It is essential that Yucatecans go to their Historic Center to rediscover it already restored, to appropriate it, with an attitude of care, respect, and promotion,” he said.

The Historic Center of Mérida sports a new and renewed image with the Tourist and Gastronomic Corridor of 60th and 47th Street, carried out by the last administration headed by Mauricio Vila Dosal, a route that connects the heart of this city, passing through the traditional parks of Santa Lucía and Santa Ana, to the large La Plancha park, in an attractive route that can be enjoyed in a safe, accessible and sustainable way.

Likewise, the Plaza Grande of Mérida received significant rehabilitation and modernization by the last administration, turning this space into a renewed center of attraction for residents and visitors.

The interviewee explained that, as members of civil society, they are concerned that this space be protected as its restoration and rescue is planned, so alliances with law enforcement forces are important so that these properties are not vandalized.

In the image, one of the walls of the Mérida Cathedral, vandalized during a protest.

The president of the Board of Trustees pointed out that when properties at this point are vandalized, it results in the loss of heritage, which takes a long time to recover, in addition to leaving a bad impression on foreign visitors.

Canto Ureña believed that in addition to the importance per se of the place as such, it is also combined with the deep-rooted traditions of Yucatecan culture, which enrich this space, which is why he insisted that its conservation and rehabilitation will be a natural protection against phenomena such as gentrification, which has already affected places such as the country’s capital.
