On February 13, 2025, Muñeca Aguilar Martínez, a Yucatecan activist and defender of human rights based in Mérida, Yucatán, was assaulted at her home located on 44th Street in the Melchor Ocampo neighborhood.

According to the Quadratín Agency, two people entered her home and, after threatening her with a knife, physically assaulted her and stole various belongings.

According to her testimony, the criminals even took part in her pantry, which has deeply affected her economic situation.

Muñeca is in the process of physical recovery after the incident and has expressed her gratitude for the support received so far.

The activist mentioned that both her brother José, who has a disability and her pet depend on her support.

Due to the seriousness of what happened, Muñeca has begun collecting stolen items, such as clothing, household items, and food, through the Igualdad Sustantiva Yucatán collective, which is organizing donations of supplies.

In addition, Muñeca has been one of the few people in her neighborhood who has video surveillance cameras, which she has lent to her neighbors to report other criminal acts.

Although only two of her neighbors have not been assaulted so far, the activist has decided to collaborate to ensure that the authorities can clarify other crimes that have occurred in the area.

Muñeca has filed the corresponding formal complaint with the authorities and handed over the recordings from her security cameras as evidence of the assault.

In addition, a press conference is planned with her neighbors to make visible the situation of insecurity that affects the neighborhood. For those interested in helping, the Igualdad Sustantiva Yucatán collective continues to receive donations.

Those wishing to cooperate can get in touch through the collective’s social media channels.
