Travel advisory is still active for some Mexican cities

Mexico is a popular tourist destination for Europeans, Americans and Canadians alike, but the reality is that there is a high perception of insecurity.
While most tourist areas are generally safe to travel to, there are regions that are considered dangerous for travelers, with a risk of violence related to kidnappings, extortion and shootings.

American tourists have been warned not to travel to cities in the northern states of Mexico, including Tamaulipas cities such as Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, Rio Bravo, Valle Hermoso and San Fernando, with a level 4, “do not travel” warning in effect.

The U.S. embassy in Mexico said in a security alert on January 27: “The U.S. consulate is aware of increasingly frequent shootings occurring in and around Reynosa late at night and in the early hours of the morning.”

Last year, Miami-based cruise line Royal Caribbean pulled out of port calls at Manzanillo in the Mexican state of Colima after a travel warning not to go to the city.
