The Ateneo Peninsular, one of the most emblematic historic buildings in Mérida, Yucatán, is ready to reopen its doors in April 2025 after completing the third phase of its restoration.

This was announced by Anna Goycoolea Artís, director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Yucatán, who emphasized that this space will become an important cultural and archaeological study center for Yucatecans and national and international visitors.

We have very good news. We will soon announce the opening of the Peninsular Athenaeum as a major cultural and archaeological study center. The third phase of restoration is practically complete, so the facility will be ready to welcome visitors,” commented Goycoolea Artís.

The renovated Peninsular Athenaeum will feature two main areas: the Maya Train Museum, which will exhibit archaeological artifacts discovered during excavations carried out on the various sections of the railway project, and the Site Room, which will offer a historical perspective on the building and its cultural significance in the Yucatán Peninsula.

The project also includes the installation of archaeological and restoration laboratories, located at the rear of the building, which will continue to operate after the building’s opening. Also planned is the installation of a store belonging to the INAH (National Institute of Archaeology) and the National Fund for the Promotion of Handicrafts (Fonart), where visitors can purchase handicrafts and cultural products.
