The State Government, through Semujeres, recognized the historical struggle of Mayan women, who have contributed to the social development of their communities.
Mérida, Yucatán, (March 8, 2025).- With the Mayan ritual Xukulem, in Yaxhachén, municipality of Oxkutzcab, the ceremony of awarding the “U MUUK’ CH’I’IBALIL” recognition began, to three midwives, guardians of ancestral knowledge, who have assisted hundreds of women in childbirth within their communities over decades.
The head of the Women’s Secretariat (Semujeres), Sisely Burgos Cano, presented the awards and signed the document “Commitments for peace and justice for the Mayan women of Yucatan ” with representatives of the groups Red de Promotoras Mayas de Justicia en Yucatan, EQUIS Justicia para las Mujeres, and the Centro Alternativo para el Desarrollo Integral Indígena (CADIN).
The Mayan ceremony with which this first delivery of the “U MUUK’ CH’I’IBALIL” award began is to get in touch with creation and ask for abundance, give thanks, drive away bad energies, and ask for advice.
The head of Semujeres recognized the historical struggle of Mayan women who have contributed to the social development of their communities, such as the Mayan midwives of Yucatan, whose work and service have been vital to our state and our country.
She added that it is relevant and fair to recognize the invaluable work of Mayan midwifery carried out by women in each community and highlights the need to contribute with concrete public policies in favor of the human rights of Mayan women and girls.
