The archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá is ready for the spring equinox, which will be visible starting next Saturday and is expected to exceed last year’s capacity, reports “El Universal.”
Clemente Escalante Alcocer, from the Patronato de las Unidades de Servicios Culturales y Turísticos del Estado (Culture), indicated that the phenomenon of light and shadow, the descent of Kukulcán on the El Castillo pyramid, will be visible starting March 15.
According to experts from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), March 20 is the official date for this astronomical phenomenon because day and night have the same duration, he said.
“Yucatán is the window of Mayan culture to the world, therefore, from March 17 to 23 there will be a presence of state and federal agents in Chichén Itzá, along with INAH personnel,” he said.
According to the Institute, from March 18 to 21, 2023, 32,683 visitors came to Chichén Itzá to witness the equinox, and in 2024, 35,315 arrived, making the Yucatecan archaeological site the most visited during the equinox, surpassing Teotihuacán, which had 32,180 attendees.
The official indicated that some 350 agents will be part of the operation, which will take place from March 20 to 23, the days with the greatest presence of visitors.
He then reported that Cultur and the INAH carried out a tour of Chichén Itzá to define logistical details such as the location of medical services, rehydration points, bathrooms, areas for the media, and evacuation routes.
Escalante Alcocer said that, as part of the improvements, alternate access was enabled to serve the thousands of visitors expected to arrive at the archaeological site on March 21.
