The remains of a dolphin of the species known as Bufeo, approximately two meters long, were found on the coast of Yucatan, between the ports of Santa Clara and Chabihau.
The discovery, reported through social networks, has generated concern among experts, who link this fact with the effects of climate change and cold fronts that affect the peninsula.
According to Raúl Díaz Gamboa, head of the Department of Marine Biology at the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), dolphin strandings in the region may be due to multiple factors, among which are disorientation caused by changes in sea currents, the presence of predators and alterations in their natural habitat caused by climate change.
The specialist explained that, in many cases, dolphins lose their way and, although they are returned to the sea, they return to the coast, which indicates a clear disorientation.
This incident is not isolated. In February 2024, 21 pilot whales were reported stranded in the waters of Celestún, which were rescued and returned to the sea thanks to the intervention of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp).
