A Spanish citizen who vandalized a Mérida coffee shop on February 25 was released on parole this Tuesday, March 18, under a suspension of proceedings after reaching an agreement with the victims.

At the Mérida Oral Justice Center (Cejom), a hearing was held involving Spaniard Joan S. M., who reached reparation agreements with Ruth, the barista he assaulted in a Mérida coffee shop, and with the business owners.

The hearing scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, was delayed but finally began shortly after 1:00 p.m.

The intention of the Spaniard’s lawyers, also a Mexican national, from the beginning, was to reach an agreement with Ruth, the young woman he yelled at and threatened, and with the coffee shop owners.

The attacker, as you may recall, was charged with two counts of criminal damage to property, threats, and slander, and was also remanded in custody for justified reasons.

For this reason, the foreigner’s lawyers in Yucatán sought an agreement with the victim following the destruction of the Mérida cafeteria, to terminate the case early through a conditional suspension.

Through his lawyers, the foreigner who threatened an employee and caused damage to the business located on 73rd Street between 62nd and 64th Streets in the San Juan neighborhood of Mérida requested a conditional suspension, which entails a series of precautionary measures: not leaving the state and reparation for damages.

It is worth mentioning that to reach this agreement, the affected parties had to accept the proposed reparation for damages.
