Since taking office as governor of Campeche on September 16, 2021, Layda Sansores’s administration has been marked by controversies, bad decisions, and a notorious increase in the crime index at the state level.

Early Days of Layda Sansores’ Administration

Layda Sansores made history as the first woman to govern Campeche, starting her term with significant support after winning the 2021 state elections as a Morena candidate. However, her popularity has seen ups and downs since then.

An August 2023 ranking by Arias Consultores placed her on the brink of popularity among the country’s governors. Sansores experienced a 12% drop in her approval rating, placing her 30th out of 32 governors, with only 13% approval. In the same study, 54% of respondents disapproved of her performance, while only 31% expressed support, reflecting a decline in public perception of her management.

Current Popularity of Layda Sansores

The most recent survey by Revista 32 agency placed Sansores in 23rd place out of 32 governors evaluated in February, with a 20% approval rating. Only two governors ranked below her: Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla of Michoacán with 19% approval and Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío of Baja California Sur with 18%. All three governors belong to the Morena party.

A study by Demoscopia Digital indicated that as of January 2025, 51.5% of Campeche residents approved of Sansores’ administration, while 48.5% disapproved. These results contrast sharply with the high approval ratings she enjoyed at the beginning of her administration in 2021, when she had 62% approval against 29% disapproval.

Controversies During Layda Sansores’ Government

Layda Sansores’s administration has been marred by controversies that have impacted her image and public perception:

– Political Gender Violence: In July 2023, the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) confirmed that Sansores committed political gender violence against PRI deputies. She accused PRI legislators on her program “Martes del Jaguar” of sending intimate photographs to party leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas (Alito) in exchange for political favors. As a result, Sansores was entered into the national registry of people sanctioned for political gender violence and was ordered to offer a public apology and delete related publications.

– Controversial Use of “Martes del Jaguar”: The weekly program “Martes del Jaguar,” broadcast on social media and local media, has been criticized for spreading defamation and launching personal attacks. Journalist Carlos Martínez Caamal highlighted this in his May 26, 2022, column in La Barra Noticias, stating that the show distracts citizens from unresolved issues and attacks political adversaries and communicators.

– Conflicts with Opponents: Sansores has maintained a tense relationship with opposition leaders, particularly Moreno Cárdenas. Her public statements and constant confrontations have further polarized the political landscape in the state.

– Questioned Management: Although no specific cases have been highlighted, the low approval ratings reflect citizen discontent regarding key issues such as security and economic development. According to the National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU) by the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI), 50% of the population felt unsafe living in Campeche earlier this year.

Layda Sansores’ administration has been marked by political controversies, including her recent appearance dressed as Marie Antoinette to promote the Pre-Carnival Women’s Festival in Fracciorama 2000. Communications consultant Bárbara Tijerina commented on her X account, “Layda Sansores dresses up as Marie Antoinette in Campeche to ‘promote’ a festival. It looks like AI, but it is earthly madness. If the image is language, it screams that it is intoxicated with power.”
