World Obesity Day, an internationally recognized event, moved to March 4 in 2020 from its previous date of October 11. It serves as an annual platform to raise awareness and advocate for practical solutions in addressing the global obesity crisis.

For too long, responses to the obesity crisis have been focused on individuals. It’s time we turn our attention to the systems that are failing us. Health systems, government systems, food systems, the media, and the environments we work and live in. All these systems are contributing to the increasing rates of obesity around the world.

People must work together to call for change to these systems, and people living with obesity must lead this call.

We must also recognize obesity as a complex and chronic disease and one that is also a driver of other diseases. Taking action against obesity is a critical step in reducing the global burden of other chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Together, governments, health professionals, advocates and the public can transform our systems, and build a healthier future for people all over the world.

Walking is a simple yet effective solution in combating obesity as a public health problem. As a low-impact exercise, it is accessible to individuals of all ages and fitness levels, requiring no special equipment or training.

Regular walking helps to burn calories, improve cardiovascular health, and boost metabolism, making it an excellent way to manage weight. Moreover, walking can be easily incorporated into daily routines, such as commuting, running errands, or enjoying strolls, promoting a more active lifestyle.

Beyond physical health, walking also offers mental health benefits, such as reducing stress and improving mood, which can further support weight management efforts. By encouraging more people to walk regularly, communities can take a proactive step towards reducing obesity rates and promoting overall well-being.
