Mega-blackout affects Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo

Electric service in the Yucatan Peninsula and Tabasco has been restored to 100%; this was the cause of the mega-blackout.

After the Yucatan Peninsula and Tabasco were left without power due to a massive blackout, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that service had been restored to 47% by midnight on Tuesday, March 25th.

In a statement, the CFE announced that the cause of the mega-blackout was poor natural gas quality caused by high humidity levels in the Mayakán pipeline.

This was caused by a failure at the Nuevo Pemex cogeneration plant, limiting electricity generation with this fuel. Due to the poor gas quality, generating plants had to switch to alternative fuels.

To mitigate the impacts during this period of irregular supply, the Generation Subdirectorate, in coordination with the subsidiary CFEnergía and the National Energy Control Center (CONACE), decided to implement scheduled power outages for periods (rotating outages) to minimize the impact on users.

As a result, the states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Yucatán were affected, with 47% of their service restored by midnight.

The CFE emphasized that it is working together with Petróleos Mexicanos to fully restore electricity service in the region.
