With the start of the sea turtle nesting season in Yucatán, the Pronatura Association reaffirms its commitment to the recovery and conservation of these species.
For more than 30 years, Pronatura has worked to protect the turtle population in the state and the Caribbean, contributing to the reproduction of several marine species.
Currently, Yucatán and the Caribbean are experiencing significant reproduction rates, with 25% of the hawksbill turtle population in the Wider Caribbean region, while the Kemp’s ridley, green, and loggerhead turtle species are found in the Gulf.
These turtles, which have survived catastrophic events, play a crucial role in regulating the quality of marine ecosystems, which in turn benefits fisheries and helps maintain healthy ecosystems.
Turtle care has become increasingly complex, as organizations like Pronatura lack fixed funding and instead rely on external support to continue their programs.
Despite this difficulty, the organization continues its work to conserve and protect these species, which are valuable for the balance of our ecosystems.
