To the theft committed in the Guadalupe chapel, in the Chicxulub Puerto police station, is added the one that occurred in the church of San José,  on 54th Street between 29th and 31st, in the Ismael García neighborhood, in the east of this city.

On this occasion, the thieves stole a horn used in masses and an electric guitar used by the choir during Sunday Eucharistic ceremonies. So far this year, it is the second church in this port to be robbed.

Last month, speakers were stolen from the Santo Niño de Atocha chapel, located on 37th Street between 62nd and 62-A, in the Francisco I. Madero neighborhood.

The robbery in the church of San José occurred between the night of Wednesday the 26th and the early hours of Thursday, February 27th.

It was discovered in the morning when the sacristan who attends the chapel noticed that a wooden window on the south side was open and forced. That’s where the criminals entered and then left through the front door.

Juan Barco, sacristan of San José, explained that it is the third robbery that the church has suffered. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, a ciborium had already been stolen, among other objects.

Previously, there was a robbery in the catechism room, although he did not remember what was taken.

The parish of Purísima Concepción and San José, headed by Father Óscar Cetina Vega, filed the complaint with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) since as it is a temple, it is up to this authority to carry out the investigation.

Likewise, at the time the theft was reported in the chapel of Santo Niño de Atocha. After the investigations, three people, allegedly responsible, were arrested and handed over to the corresponding authorities.

The recent robberies in churches in Progreso have generated outrage among families who live near the chapels, who regret that the criminals do not even respect the temples. The parish of Progreso is already analyzing the possibility of closing the chapels and officiating masses only in the Purísima Concepción and San José.
