On Thursday, March 13th, Mayor Erik Rihani González welcomed the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, and the Governor of Yucatán, Joaquín Díaz Mena, to present the Mangrove Reforestation Program of SEMARNAT and the Fishing Communities of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
The mayor highlighted the importance of inter-institutional coordination and the commitment of the authorities to protecting mangroves, acknowledging the support provided to Progreso in the conservation of this vital ecosystem.
He also emphasized that his administration works jointly with Semarnat and the State Government on long-term environmental protection projects.
For his part, Bárcena Ibarra recognized the work of the fishing communities of Hunucmá, Dzilam Bravo, Santa Clara, Buctzotz, Río Lagartos, Las Coloradas, and Chuburná Puerto in mangrove reforestation.
During her visit, the secretary swore in the oversight committees of these communities, which are part of the Coastal Communities Against Climate Change (C5) program of the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC). These committees will reinforce the work of the Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) through environmental education activities, collaboration with the agency, and promotion of sustainable natural resource management.
Previously, authorities launched the program with the planting of the first specimens of red, black, and white mangroves in the Chuburná Puerto mangrove area.
The mayor invited the public to learn more about the mangrove reforestation program in Yucatán and to join the efforts to protect these essential ecosystems.
State and federal environmental authorities were present at the event.
