The Yucatán International Reading Fair (Filey) 2025 opened its doors this Saturday at the Siglo XXI Convention Center, where hundreds of people gathered early to enjoy the encounter with literature.

In its 13th edition, under the motto “Time to Read,” it offers a diverse program that includes book presentations, conferences, workshops, performances, films, exhibitions, and activities dedicated to Mayan culture and other indigenous languages.

María Teresa Mézquita Méndez, director of the fair, was among the first to address the audience during the opening ceremony, where she highlighted the event’s role as a bridge between tradition and innovation.

In her speech, she highlighted how Filey unites oral tradition with the written word, connecting the past with the future. She also expressed her gratitude to the rector of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY), Carlos Estrada Pinto, and the organizing team for their efforts in strengthening this space for literary exchange.

The fair involves more than 1,200 people in its organization and development. While 200 events were held in its first edition in 2012, the number will rise to 700 by 2025. In addition, 10,000 titles will be exhibited and sold.

The official opening of the Filey was led by the Secretary of Culture and the Arts, Patricia Martín Briceño.

The fair will run from March 23rd to 30th.
