Yucatán: Meetings Tourism Expected to Increase This Year

With unprecedented growth, Yucatán projects to close 2025 with six times more activity in the meetings tourism sector compared to 2024.

This was reported by David Escalante Lombard, director of the Public Trust for the Development of Meetings Tourism in Yucatán (Fideture), who highlighted the increase in the organization of events and conferences in the region.

“We started with a busy quarter. Although we were left with 10 events under the previous administration, we have worked to organize more and now we have closed 53 events of different categories: medical, corporate, and sports, among others,” Escalante Lombard explained to 24 Horas Yucatán.

The official celebrated the entity’s participation in events such as the World Volleyball Tour, which, although a sporting event, also impacts meetings tourism due to its economic impact and the mobilization of visitors.

He also noted that meeting tourism plays a fundamental role in the local economy, as it balances out periods of low tourist activity:

“During the off-peak periods for leisure tourism, meeting tourism helps us round out the year. Events tend to be concentrated in February, March, May, and June, and then pick up again in September, October, November, and early December,” he explained.

Among the sectors with the greatest demand, he specified, are the medical and corporate sectors: “The medical sector has a strong presence, with training and events for the pharmaceutical industry and doctors. Sports tourism has also grown thanks to the governor’s support and the synergy with CONADE, now led by Rommel Pacheco.”

To consolidate this growth, he said, Fideture has intensified its promotion in Mexico City, focusing on agencies and corporations that can bring incentive trips.

“We have made three presentations in the nation’s capital to showcase our infrastructure. Yucatán is one of the few destinations in Mexico with two convention venues: the International Congress Center and the Siglo XXI Convention Center, both surrounded by hotels, restaurants, museums, and shopping centers, which makes the region very attractive for these events,” he specified. Regarding expectations for the end of 2025, he stated that the year “looks much better” than they expected at the start of the administration: “They left us with very few events, but now we’ve increased our activity sixfold. Interest in the plaza is growing, and requests for the International Congress Center keep coming in. This is a year that will close much better than 2024,” he concluded.
