The Government of Yucatán and the National System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (DIF) signed a collaboration agreement for the establishment of a social assistance center for migrant children, to be called “Casa U’ulab.”

With this, the State Government offers a new space of dignity, protection, and hope for migrant children and adolescents, in response to the growing migration in transit of this population segment, based on social justice, human rights, and profound respect for childhood.

Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, the honorary president of the Yucatán DIF, teacher Wendy Méndez Naal, and the head of the National DIF, María del Rocío García Pérez, signed this working agreement for more than 50 minors, which will be the capacity of this care center. Yucatán will therefore be the 30th state in the country with this type of facility.

This center is a structured response to the exponential increase in child migration in transit through Yucatan, a model in which migrant children cease to be a number and become a priority.

At the “Casa U’ulab,” they will not only be provided shelter and food, but will also receive medical, psychological, and educational care, legal support, and, above all, dignified treatment.

For this reason, the Governor expressed his gratitude for the joint efforts of the Yucatán Children’s Protection Agency (DIF), the Office of the Attorney General for the Protection of Children and Adolescents to ensure that this center has trained personnel, adequate infrastructure, and an operating system that can serve as a model for the rest of the country.

In her speech, the honorary president of the Yucatán Children’s Protection Agency (DIF), teacher Wendy Méndez Naal, thanked the National DIF for its support in making projects benefiting migrants a reality. “I take this excellent opportunity to express my profound gratitude to the National DIF for selecting Yucatán as the host of the next “National Meeting on Food and Development 2025.”

Accompanied by Shirley Castillo Sánchez, Director of the Yucatán DIF, she emphasized the commitment of state governments and society to strengthen actions that protect human rights, especially those of children and adolescents, in the face of the complex situations arising from deportations.

“Our gratitude to the National DIF for its invaluable support,” Méndez Naal reiterated, highlighting the importance of inter-institutional collaboration.

The agreement between the Government of Yucatán and the National DIF will allow for the remodeling of this care center, as well as its equipment, the purchase of basic necessities, and the payment of operating expenses.
