MÉRIDA, MX.- According to Edith Olivares Ferreto, representative of Amnesty International in Mexico, the police repression experienced in Cancún on November 9, 2020, during a march, in which people were attacked with weapons, is classified as one of the five most serious repressions against a feminist protest in the country and one of the 10 in the world.
In a visit to Merida, Olivares Ferreto said that as a group they investigate human rights violations and of the five feminist protests considered the most serious in the country, one of them is the one that took place in Cancun last November 9, 2020, remembered as the 9N, since they had taken to the streets to protest and demand justice precisely because of the reported femicide where the victim was the young Alexis.
“In those five protests considered among the most serious, we documented and identified arbitrary detentions, excessive use of force and sexual violence,”
The activist added that Amnesty International has a global campaign in which 10 cases of police violence in marches around the world were identified and the one that happened in Cancun is contemplated, especially because of the human rights violations that occurred.
“We have the case of Wendy Galarza, one of the victims of police brutality, in addition to the fact that she suffered two bullet impacts”, he commented.
He also stated that in all cases there have been reports of police brutality, sexual violence, use of weapons and even torture.
So far, in the case of 9N there are 11 policemen accused of allegedly ordering and shooting against the demonstrators and so far, that is to say, one year after the events, justice has not been done in favor of the injured people.
