MEXICO, (December 13, 2021).- On penalties, and with a lot of drama included, the Atlas broke his 70 year curse and was crowned as the new mexican soccer champion after beating León in the penalty shootout that defined the Apertura Tournament (4-3).
Julio Furch was in charge of ending the curse, just after Luis Montes missed the fifth penalty taken by León. This is how Atlas won his second championship in Mexico, the first since the 1950-1951 season.
The match was locked, a classic in a final, but Atlas always insisted more than León, as they had the most shots on goal. The Jalisco Stadium pushed those led by Diego Cocca like never before.
Julián Quiñones was a danger throughout the entire match. The clearest was at 28 ‘, when he defined a heads-up against Rodolfo Cota with a hat, but the ball crashed into the post.
At 55 ′ came the reward for the rojinegros: Aldo Rocha, with a pass from Ángel Márquez, put the 1-0 on the scoreboard and the tie on aggregate (3-3) with a header. He dedicated it to his father.

Furch, crossed but better off the corner than Montes’s previous shot, beat Cota and unleashed madness at the Jalisco Stadium, which turned into a party.
