The Mexican First Division, also known simply as Liga MX or for reasons of sponsorship Liga BBVA MX, is the highest men’s category in the Mexican league system and the country’s main club competition.

MEXICO, (December 13, 2021).- On penalties, and with a lot of drama included, the Atlas broke his 70 year curse and was crowned as the new mexican soccer champion after beating León in the penalty shootout that defined the Apertura Tournament (4-3).

Julio Furch was in charge of ending the curse, just after Luis Montes missed the fifth penalty taken by León. This is how Atlas won his second championship in Mexico, the first since the 1950-1951 season.

The match was locked, a classic in a final, but Atlas always insisted more than León, as they had the most shots on goal. The Jalisco Stadium pushed those led by Diego Cocca like never before.

Julián Quiñones was a danger throughout the entire match. The clearest was at 28 ‘, when he defined a heads-up against Rodolfo Cota with a hat, but the ball crashed into the post.

At 55 ′ came the reward for the rojinegros: Aldo Rocha, with a pass from Ángel Márquez, put the 1-0 on the scoreboard and the tie on aggregate (3-3) with a header. He dedicated it to his father.

The Jalisco Stadium exploded.

Atlas was not satisfied with the tie and looked for the 2-0 that would give him the title. At 80 ′ he had it on a silver platter, but Edgar Zaldívar made a mistake as we have rarely seen in history.

With the goal empty, because Cota did not have time to recover after trying to save a shot from Christopher Trejo that hit the post, Zaldívar, who was in the small area, I just had to define the network with a touch. And he missed it: he nodded softly and with bad direction. It gave the rival goalkeeper time to take the ball on the line.

Later, León was more complicated than necessary in the face of the extension due to Emanuel Gigliotti, who came out sent off for double yellow at 90 + 3 ′. Less than 10 minutes before he had received a yellow card. And only half an hour before he had entered the field.

Therefore, overtime had a clear dominator of possession: Atlas, with more than 70%. However, they failed to translate possession of the ball into goals. In fact, León endured well and was the team that had the clearest in the extension.

In the penalty shootout, the new champion of Mexican soccer was defined, who took the throne left vacant by Cruz Azul.

For León, who started kicking, Elías Hernández, Ángel Mena and William Tesillo scored. While for Atlas, Jesús Angulo, Edgar Zaldívar, Christopher Trejo and Julio Furch, the hero of the night in Jalisco, were right.

Fernando Navarro (León) was the first to miss during the penalty shoot-out, just in the second charge.

Then Aldo Rocha (Altas) did the same.

Camilo Vargas dressed as a hero by saving the fifth penalty, charged by Luis Montes. The penalty that would leave everything served to Furch to conclude with the curse.

Furch, crossed but better off the corner than Montes’s previous shot, beat Cota and unleashed madness at the Jalisco Stadium, which turned into a party.
