There have been more than 644 thousand excess deaths in Mexico during the pandemic, 47.2% more than expected.
(CDMX – TYT) – In a report entitled “Excess mortality from all causes during the COVID-19 emergency, Mexico, 2020-2021”, the federal agency pointed out that of the above-mentioned accumulated deaths, 448,633 deaths, 69.9 percent of the total, are associated with COVID-19.
The Ministry of Health detailed that, from January 2020 to epidemiological week 44 of 2021, 1,366,317 deaths due to different causes were expected. Instead, however, 2 million 10 thousand 916 were observed, representing a 47.2 percent increase.
This Ministry of Health informed that Mexico has 3 million 930 thousand 15 cases and 297 thousand 567 deaths due to COVID-19. In addition, in the last 24 hours, the country registered 2,750 infections and 211 deaths due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
With these figures, Mexico remains the country with the fourth-highest number of deaths due to COVID-19, behind the United States, Brazil, and India, and the fifteenth in many confirmed infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
Health authorities acknowledge that, based on death certificates, the pandemic is estimated to have caused around 448,000 deaths in the country and estimate that Mexico accumulates 4,153,462 infections.
Of the number of cases, there are 18,756 active cases, which have presented symptoms during the last 14 days and represent 0.5 percent of the total.
In addition, since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,283,899 people have recovered.
The Mexican Government acknowledged that there is an “upward trend” in the number of COVID-19 infections in the northern states of the country, although it argued that it remains at a low level in the rest of the country.
The affected states are Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, and Aguascalientes, currently in a yellow traffic light for medium epidemic risk level, according to Hugo Lopez-Gatell, undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion.
On December 3, Mexico’s Government confirmed the arrival of the omicron variant. So far, there has been a decrease in the number of infections since the peak of the third wave, reached between July and August.
