PROGRESO, Yucatan, (January 8, 2022).- Equipped with bags and a strong sense of purpose, students from the Tecnológico Nacional de México (TecNM) Campus Progreso cleaned the beach and green spaces of the port, with the objective of instituting an integral plan, creative, ethical, and responsible for thinking, and raising awareness of human environmental impact.

Due to the presence of contaminating and health-damaging microorganisms, there are already beaches that are not suitable for swimming nationwide; fortunately, this is not the case in Yucatán, but although the Yucatecan beaches are clean now, they are at risk of being affected.

The main causes of pollution, in addition to natural phenomena, such as sargassum, rains, red tides, hurricanes, and unexpected climatic changes, can be organic materials, household garbage, and other wastes, such as plastic.

“We are committed to training engineers with a vision of sustainable development, who are sensitive to the problems in their environment, and who can propose, design, and create solutions for the challenges that arise every day, such as the issue of caring for the environment ”, informed the director of the campus, María del Carmen Ordaz Martínez.

As a result of the coordination between teachers and tutors, several activities were carried out, including cleaning tasks in beaches and green areas, focused on behavior change and awareness of marine pollution, to move towards a reduction of marine debris and the will to keep these areas in good condition. optimal.

“We invite you to pick up your garbage when you come to the beach, you have to be aware of the environment and it is fair that we take care of it,” they pointed out during this day, with which the school makes a presence and leaves its mark on society.

Likewise, they invited the people of Merida to have as a culture the protection of the environment, and to contribute a grain of sand to build the Mexico and Yucatan that we want.
