The Mexican Navy (SEMAR) will be in charge of security at the Mérida airport as well as the rest of the country, said the state director of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), Luis Pimentel Miranda.
(MÉRIDA – TYT), January 22, 2022.- The Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR), will take control of the security of seven airports in the country, including four in the Yucatan Peninsula, Merida and Cancun among them.
According to federal government sources cited by national media , as of this month Semar commanders will replace the commanders and all the other officials of the National Guard deployed in those air terminals.
On Friday, January 21st, the changes were made in terminals 1 and 2 of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM). Instead of elements of the National Guard, 250 sailors will be in charge of security at the air terminal.

The other 6 airports where the Navy would control internal security are: Mérida and Kaua (Chichén Itzá), in Yucatán, Cancún and Cozumel, in Quintana Roo; and Tapachula and Tuxtla Gutiérrez, in Chiapas.
Despite the announcement, the National Guard continued with surveillance work at the Mérida airport. However, authorities of the Merida terminal indicated that they are “attentive to any warning.”
On the night of Friday, January 21st, 2022, the surveillance at the Mérida airport was still in charge of the National Guard.
At the airport there are officers of the Navy; however, they are dedicated exclusively to taking care of the planes that this militarized sector has at its disposal at the air terminal.
The airport authorities indicated that the surveillance carried out by the National Guard continued to be normal and they had not received any different indication from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency, agency responsible for the custody of aerial activities. If the change is made, it would be in the next few hours.
