The burning season in Yucatan has barely been underway for five days and it has already affected public spaces, such as the Animaya Zoo where a fire was registered on March, 5th.

According to reports, the fire started at the back of the zoo, on the side where the lions’ viewing platform is located.

Firefighters from the Secretariat of Public Security arrived at the site to extinguish the flames. Without official information on the causes, so far, the fire was reported to have covered about four hectares of undergrowth. Fortunately, no people or animals were reported injured.

This is the second high-profile case in the west of Mérida in little more than a week, as at the end of February the landfill located in Susulá caught fire (again). The two sites are less than 5 km apart from each other.

A big cloud of smoke covered a large part of the road to the Animaya Zoo for a couple of hours.
