The state governor announced that Tesla’s “Giga-factory”, to be installed in Nuevo Leon, could be operating by the end of this year or early 2024.
Nuevo León, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas will become a single commercial corridor with the installation of Tesla in Santa Catarina, said Governor Samuel García on Monday, March 6th.
From his office in the Government Palace, the state chief executive highlighted the boost that this northern region of the country will have with the arrival of the “Gigafactory” for electric cars, a project that was confirmed just last Wednesday by Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, during the celebration of the “Investor Day 2023“, held in Austin, Texas.
“Tamaulipas, having the border will be highly benefited; Coahuila, the Monterrey-Saltillo corridor will have a lot of growth and I have no doubt that suppliers will come to Tamaulipas or Coahuila, and San Luis has a large automotive cluster, so it is a regional spillover,” he said.
The “gigaplant” of the electric car assembly plant will be installed in the municipality of Santa Catarina, adjacent to the neighboring state of Coahuila.
Garcia said he has been in constant communication with his counterparts in Coahuila, Miguel Angel Riquelme and Tamaulipas, Americo Villarreal, whose states will also benefit from the project.
“Yes, we have been talking with Américo, with Riquelme”, he said.
HE DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT THE SUBURBAN TRAIN PROJECT
The governor said he was unaware of the suburban train project that would connect the industrial zones of Derramadero and Ramos Arizpe to the limits with Nuevo León; however, he assured that he would support any project that would be beneficial for the region.
“I do not have the Monterrey-Saltillo train on my radar, I am focused on the suburban train in the city, but I am open to all projects”, he assured.
After Tesla’s installation in the state was confirmed, the president was confident that Elon Musk will come to lay “the first stone” of the project.
However, he said that this will have to be in about a month or a month and a half when the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) releases all the federal permits.
After that, the Nuevo Leon “gigafactory” could be operating by the end of 2023 or early 2024.
