Vila Dosal held working meetings with representatives of important industries to detonate Yucatan’s port growth, such as Fincantieri, Boskalis Dragamex and Global Ports Holding.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, March 28, 2023.- Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal continues to promote the projection of Yucatan internationally, seeking the arrival of more tourism and economic spillover to the state, by strengthening the maritime connection through Puerto Progreso with its participation in the Global Maritime Trade Cruise (Seatrade Cruise Global, by its name in English), the most important meeting in the world of the industry, which brings together the most representative shipping companies in the industry.

In this context, Vila Dosal held working meetings with the CEO of Fincantieri, Pierroberto Folgiero, the regional manager of Boskalis Dragamex, David Vergara, and with Mehmet Kutman, CEO of Global Ports Holding, the world’s largest cruise port operator, to continue promoting the advantages of the state and promote its development with strategic projects that benefit the families of the state.

In the search for more development opportunities for Yucatan and its inhabitants, Vila Dosal presented to the CEO of Global Ports Holding, Mehmet Kutman, the economic growth of Yucatan, which is higher than the average for the entire country, the competitive advantages that the state has for exports, as well as the historic investments that have been attracted to the state that are generating quality jobs in the state.

Before Erika Tache, Vice President of Business Development of said international company that has presence in different parts of the world such as Barcelona, Venice, Fuerteventura, Nassau, Malaga, Ha-Long Bay, Singapore, among others, the Governor presented the hard data that reflect the great moment that Yucatan is going through and that make it a certain place to invest.

“We are living a great moment in Yucatan, as the entity ranks third nationally in this sector in attracting relocation investments and first place in attracting foreign direct investment and in percentage growth. In 2022 alone, with respect to 2021, we present a growth of 268%, as a result of the state’s promotion strategy at national and international level, which is allowing more companies to choose the state to develop their projects,” said Vila Dosal, accompanied by the head of the Ministry of Economic Development and Labor (SEFOET), Ernesto Herrera Novelo.

During this important meeting, which takes place from March 27 to 30 in Florida, United States, the Governor and the CEO of the Italian company, Pierroberto Folgiero, held a working meeting to continue advancing in the project to build the largest shipyard in the Americas in the Yucatan port.

It is worth mentioning that as a result of Vila Dosal’s efforts and national and international promotion of the state, Fincantieri has set its eyes on Yucatan to install and operate a shipyard with an investment, in the first stage, of 150 million dollars, which could reach 500 million in the long term, with the generation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs for the inhabitants.

To this end, the Governor continues to work in coordination with the Federation. It should be recalled that yesterday, Monday, he held a meeting with the head of the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), Admiral José Rafael Ojeda Durán, to review the progress of the project for the expansion and modernization of the Puerto de Altura, a work that will allow the port to receive larger commercial and tourist ships, reduce logistics costs and thus increase the state’s competitive advantages.

It should be noted that Fincantieri plans to design and build a new ship repair, conversion and maintenance shipyard that will include the manufacture of two masonry docks, the largest in America, a project that will allow the Yucatan shipyard to receive large ships, particularly cruise ships, as well as large container ships and tankers that require complex operations. This project will place Yucatan in the sights of the large shipping companies that will require its services and will also generate a large number of jobs, not only in its construction, but also in its subsequent start-up.

Continuing with his work agenda, Vila Dosal held a meeting with David Vergara, general director of Boskalis Dragamex, a Dutch company expert in dredging and port construction at an international level, with whom he discussed the project to expand the Port of Progreso and reviewed different alternatives and the advantages that Yucatan has to boost its economic development.

In this way, Yucatan was present at Seatrade Cruise Global, the largest global meeting of companies and service providers in the cruise tourism industry held at the Broward County Convention Center, taking advantage of this site of contact with other destinations, cruise line executives, tour operators and colleagues from Mexico and around the world to bring opportunities that generate economic spillover and quality jobs in Yucatan.

More than 80 cruise lines, more than 10 thousand attendees from 85 countries represented, more than 45 hours of networking and more than 500 exhibitors will participate in this event. Highlights include cruise line brands from around the world such as Abercrombie & Kent, AIDA, American Queen Voyages, American Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival, Costa, Disney Cruise Line, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Explora Journeys, Holland America Line, Hurtigruten, Lindblad Expeditions, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, PONANT, Royal Caribbean International, Silversea, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Voyages and Windstar Cruises.
