During the last few weeks, dozens of migrants have been taken into custody due to the wave of people entering the country through the Yucatan Peninsula.

A dozen migrants from India were taken into custody in the city of Umán, Yucatán, and transferred to the National Migration Institute in Mérida.

According to initial reports, several people were detained in the operation carried out in the center of Umán. Unofficially, it was also reported that human traffickers use the hotels on the outskirts of the city to shelter the migrants.

The Yucatan Peninsula has been receiving a wave of irregular migrants heading to the United States for weeks, and cases such as the one in Uman are constant.

Just on March 28th, 32 people from India were found in a trailer lock-up, and yesterday in the vicinity of Poxilá another 14 were detained, but these were of Brazilian origin.

The operation mounted by the Secretariat of Public Security in the latter case took the inhabitants by surprise, as a helicopter was even used.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, more than two years ago, migratory flows in Mexico increased drastically, in the midst of the economic effects caused by the sanitary contingency.

As a result, the country is facing a strong crisis due to the number of people seeking to cross the country towards the US border to apply for asylum on the other side of the Rio Bravo.
