04/13/2023 | Mérida, Yucatán.- Before the start of the worldwide hurricane season, hurricane forecasters will conduct a preparedness tour of Mexico and the Caribbean aboard the WC-130J, a U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft that will be on display at the Merida International Airport.
The mission is to help the local communities prepare for the upcoming storms.
During this awareness tour, the WC-130J will make public tours at Merida International Airport on April 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will then visit the International Airport of Chetumal, Quintana Roo.

Jamie Rhome, acting director of the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), and other U.S. Air Force specialists in this hydrometeorological phenomenon will travel through Mexico and the Caribbean to analyze the specific risks for each community that has the possibility of facing impact cyclones.
In the Atlantic area, the hurricane season begins on June 1st.
2023 hurricane season: At least two major cyclones are expected in the Atlantic Ocean.
“Everyone needs to plan; from individuals, and businesses to local governments. By transmitting the data we collect from storms to the NHC, which can then provide greater accuracy in forecasting where a hurricane will hit, it ensures the public has the most up-to-date information to make the best decision; stay or evacuate,” said Lt. Col. Meteorologist Kaitlyn McLaughlin in a statement.
The state-of-the-art WC-130J aircraft have the ability to fly directly into the core of the storm to collect data and forecast the intensity and landfall of a hurricane.
