In Yucatan, the accelerated increase of dengue fever has caused the disease to be present in 26 municipalities, mainly affecting the East and South as well as Merida and its surrounding towns, revealed the Federal Health Ministry.
At the end of March, it was confirmed that the four serotypes of dengue, a lethal vector-borne pathology transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, are circulating in the State.
The Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE) reported that in just one week, dengue fever in Yucatan increased by 8.18 percent, with one case confirmed every eight hours, and in this epidemiological week the first cases were detected in Chichimilá, Cuzamá and Oxkutzcab.
So far this year, 304 confirmed cases have been detected, distributed in 26 municipalities, affecting mainly in the east and south of Yucatan, where outbreaks have been registered, as well as in Merida and some suburban areas.
The disease increased 304 times compared to the same period in 2021, which accumulated only one case, but below Quintana Roo.
Sinave affirmed that Yucatan remains in second place nationally in the incidence of dengue infection as well as cases per 100,000 inhabitants, for the 14th consecutive week.
Likewise, the lethal pathology prevails in 26 towns, specifically Acanceh, Akil, Buctzotz, Chemax, Chocholá, Espita, Kanasín, Mérida, Opichén, Panabá, Peto, Progreso, Santa Elena, Tecoh, Tekax, Temozón, Ticul, Tinum, Tizimín, Umán, Valladolid, Yaxcabá and Yobaín, with the addition of Chichimilá, Cuzamá and Oxkutzcab.
Santa Elena alone has a rate of 91.3; in Progreso, it is 49.19, as well as in Yobaín with 39.7, and Umán, with 20.25.
Up to the 14th epidemiological week of the year, 1,933 confirmed cases were registered in Mexico, distributed in 22 states.
According to the “Epidemiological Panorama of Dengue”, the greatest problem is registered in Quintana Roo, with 903 cases, 46.71 percent, followed by Yucatan, with 304 cases, 15.73 percent, and Veracruz, with 157 cases, 8.12 percent. Campeche is in eleventh place, with 32 positive, 1.65 percent.
The first three states account for 64.1 percent of the total incidence of this disease.
Likewise, Dengue serotypes 01, 02, 03 and 04 are currently circulating in Chiapas, Michoacán, Quintana Roo, Veracruz and Yucatán.
Each of the serotypes has established common and differentiable characteristics, which remain unmutated.
It should be noted that the most severe cases of this lethal disease are related to types 02 and 03.
The dengue virus is spread by infected mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus, both of which also transmit Chikungunya fever and Zika virus infection.
