The fishing sector made headlines again mid-week when alarms went off due to a seafarer requiring transportation from the open sea after experiencing health issues while carrying out deep sea fishing work.
It all began when the command and control center of the Mexican Navy reportedly received a call for assistance from the vessel “Pulmero 19”, which was finishing its journey in search of grouper.
The reason was that a sailor identified as M. del J.H.C., 27 years old, had symptoms related to appendicitis, including persistent pain and other symptoms that prevented him from continuing to work alongside his colleagues and his boss, José Alfredo Chan Jiménez.
It was reported that a military vehicle type “Defender” was used for transportation, so the ship had to travel 90 miles from the port. It was found that the sailor had vital signs suitable for him to be taken to land as soon as possible, without worsening the fisherman’s situation, despite suffering from various pains since early Wednesday morning.
The meeting point was the thirteenth naval zone, where Red Cross paramedics aboard an ambulance from the Progreso delegation were waiting to take care of the affected sailor, who arrived without complications on the mentioned military vessel.
The only thing that was mentioned during the arrival of the maritime and land units was that it sparked the interest of several fishermen who witnessed the movement, sparking a multitude of rumors due to the fact that the fishing sector has already counted three deaths.
In the end, the affected sailor was sent to a hospital to start rehabilitation, which could conclude earlier than expected and allow him to return to his activities at sea without any problems, as the grouper season is just beginning.
Tragedies at sea and outside of onboard activities on smaller and larger navigation vessels have been recurrent in this municipality. In addition, the smaller fleet has been worsened by the presence of modern pirates in the darkness of the early morning, especially in the area where sardine fishermen operate.
