On May 1st, during the press conference held at the National Palace, it was indicated that there is already a diagnosis by the Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) on the effects of this type of farms.
There are 507 farms in the state, which, due to the excess of animals in some of them, have contaminated soils, water bodies and the air, especially due to animal feces.
The Semarnat diagnosis, commented Vila Dosal, is being “socialized” in Yucatán, and “no more permits for new farms are being granted at this time, what has been done is to guarantee that the orders of the judges are complied with. For example, if there is a farm that is in suspension of activities, to guarantee that operations are not carried out”.
He also pointed out that his administration, together with federal authorities, has proposed the possible relocation of certain farms, “to move them away from the cenotes rings, new treatment plants, new technologies”, to counteract the problems caused.
Finally, President López Obrador added that Semarnat and the government of Yucatán are working together on this situation and “they have made considerable progress”.
