Cancun, Q. Roo.- This week, the Instituto de Infraestructura Física Educativa del Estado de Quintana Roo (IFEQROO) will begin monitoring more than 2,500 schools that act as hurricane shelters in the state.
José Rafael Lara Díaz, executive director of Ifeqroo, said the monitoring is part of the work prior to the 2023 Caribbean weather season. He indicated that more than 2500 schools are on the list of anti-cyclone shelters that will be ready in case they are needed in the next hurricane season.
He explained that the school compound, which is used to protect the public in case of an environmental emergency, is in optimal conditions, but it will again be under the supervision of the schools’ managers to know if it has had any damage recently.
Lara Díaz emphasizes that IFEQROO has enough material to protect the windows of the shelter with large quantities of boards and tarps, and many new schools already have tornado-proof windows.
The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season will begin on June 1 and end on November 30.
Guillermo Núñez Leal, head of the National Civil Protection Coordinator (COEPROC), added that the monitoring trips were part of the planning prior to the constitution of the Specialized Committee on Hydrometeorological Phenomena, scheduled for June 1 this year.
During the monitoring of the hurricane shelters, mainly educational institutions, they worked in coordination with the personnel of the Ministry of Education of Quintana Roo (SEQ), municipal directorates of Civil Protection, the SEMAR, SEDENA and the Ministry of Citizen Security (SSC) of Quintana Roo.
