Residents and tourists on the eastern coast of Yucatán are reporting economic losses as they have been without communication for nearly 48 hours.
According to the managers of the tourist stops in Río Lagartos, San Felipe, and Las Coloradas, there is no mobile phone service available.
This situation has caused economic losses because tourists are unable to communicate with travel agencies to schedule their visits and tours.
It should be noted that this connectivity problem is due to a fire that occurred on the Río Lagartos-Tizimín highway, which caused several poles to fall. This has been reported to the relevant authorities and telecommunications companies. However, as of the time of this report, the problem had not been resolved.
Meanwhile, workers at the tourist stops indicate that the problem started on the afternoon of May 10th, and until this Saturday, they have not had a good influx of tourists because they have been unable to communicate with the agencies and make their reservations.
Heisler Pacheco, from the ‘El Manglar Río Lagartos’ tourist stop, mentioned that they were expecting an increase in visitors this weekend, and most of the tourist stops have work thanks to reservations from various travel agencies. However, without internet and phone service, they have no way of knowing when the tourists arrive.
For example, when tourists arrive at the saltworks in Las Coloradas, the tour guides are called by phone to pick up the visitors and take them to other stops in Río Lagartos and San Felipe.
As of the time of this report, they remain without communication, and the tour guides are attending to the few tourists who arrive in the area on their own, without a travel agency. They are requesting a prompt solution to this problem, as considerable economic losses are being incurred.
